It depends on what you are planning to do with your tractor, and what type of tractor you have. For a lot of jobs, it's the traction that is the limiting factor on a compact tractor, rather than the HP. For others, the extra HP doesn't help without a larger tractor or extra ballast (for example, if your tractor doesn't weigh enough and/or isn't physically large enough to handle the next size larger brush hog, simply having a slightly larger engine isn't going to help much).
If you plan to run some power-hungry PTO implements, or if you have the weight/traction to handle that larger box blade, then the extra HP may be worth it.
Fill us in with some more info on the types of tractors you are considering and your main intended uses, and we may be able to help more.

I went with a TC29 because I wanted a live PTO and gears instead of HST. I could do just as well with a TC25 other than heavy brush hogging...that has me wanting a 33. For finish mowing, moving rocks, pushing with the blade, etc., I think that a 25 would be fine. The general rule is that the lower HP will do the same work, only (in some cases) slower.

Me too. 29, 33 or 35? Have had several dealers with different advice. Intended use: light road/trail building on hunting land, tilling, planting (clover) and mowing same. Would like a backhoe also for ditching, stumps and small pond development. Can the small tractors handle this use? How effect is the backhoe on any of these?

If I wasn't using it for finish mowing, or my finish mowing was in an open field, I wouldn't mind stepping up to the 35. May be a handfull in the woods, sometimes even my 29 is a tight fit, but the bigger tractor would definately be better for road building and backhoe work. My opinion.

I worried about having a TC 40D in the woods for its "fit" also. My solution was to go for the supersteer. I feel it was worth it. My 2 cents ....

I went through the same thinking last summer. I started out focusing on getting the TC25D. Later, it seems everybody I talked to wished they had gotten more horsepower. I then thought I would get a TC29. This inflated to wanting a TC33D. I stopped there and purchased a TC33D, because to go higher meant getting a heavier frame tractor. So, at least for me, the logic was - get the biggest engine on the size frame you are interested in.

My motto is if you spend that much might as well get the bigger motor.I didn't like the 4000 john deere because frelt like sitting in a cockpit no room.Like the 4200 could decide if the engine was big enough so finnally decided on the 4400 the biggest they had on that size frame the 4500 has a bigger frame and wanted hydr.Went with the 430 loader instead of the 420.Dealer said the 4200 would handle the compact tractor but oppted for the bigger loader don't have to work it so hard and heaver made.Glad i made to go bigger just what i needed.
